The northern part of Baja California has a Mediterranean climate, with dry and mild summers and cool and at times rainy winters.
The plants that thrive best in this climate all year round are agaves, smaller succulents, short grasses and cacti – all of which can be seen and enjoyed when exploring the walking paths around Centro de Conferencias.
Agaves are plants superbly adapted to the climate – collecting humidity from the morning fog and letting almost no water evaporate from their leaves. After some years, a tall flower stalk grows out of the plant’s center, which attracts the local populations of hummingbirds and bees.
Cacti can be found in many different sizes and shapes, and are an amazing sight when they flower. Some cacti flower only for a day, while others keep their flowers for several weeks.
Another impressive sight in the nature of northern Baja California is the wildflower bloom in the springtime. In years when the winter months have brought good rains, one can enjoy a carpet of orange, blue, yellow and purple flowers covering the hills and plains.
Turning west towards the Pacific Ocean there is yet more nature to enjoy. Low tide is the time to explore the rock pools along the edge of the ocean, teeming with all kinds of creatures. The pools resemble flower beds, with large green sea anemones mixing beautifully with purple urchins and orange starfish. Crabs of many sizes hurry about, and occasionally one can be lucky and spot an octopus, changing its color to blend in with the rock below.
